I. What is counseling?

A: Psychological counseling refers to the process by which a psychologist uses the principles and methods of psychology to assist a visitor in solving a psychological problem. Psychological counseling is different from the counseling and comfort of friends and relatives, and it is also different from the instruction and education of teachers. It is a professional activity with scientific theoretical foundations and strict operating procedures. Only people who have undergone professional training and obtained the corresponding qualifications can become psychological counselors and engage in psychological consulting work.

2. Who is the client of psychological counseling?

A: We have a student psychological counseling center that provides psychological consultation services to all undergraduate students at the university. It is free to receive counseling at the psychological consulting center.

3. What are the content of psychological counseling services?

A: The content of psychological counseling mainly includes: (1) Adaptive counseling. The purpose of such counseling is to help students deal with problems in their studies and in their lives, such as college adjustment, study, interpersonal, emotional, and other emotional and stressful issues for a variety of reasons. (2) Developmental consulting. The purpose of such counseling is to help students better understand themselves, avoid shortcomings, develop their potential, improve the quality of learning and life, and pursue a better development. Examples include how to handle the relationship between study and work, and what career is more conducive to your development.

Neurosis, mental illness, etc. are not within the scope of psychological counseling, and the psychological consultation center can conduct a preliminary assessment of visitors and provide information on specialized medical institutions for visitors to choose medical treatment. During the course of the medication treatment, psychological counseling will also be provided to the visitors to help them recover better.

A: Psychological counseling is mainly aimed at people who are psychologically normal. Its purpose is to help visitors properly deal with various problems in study, life and work, including college adjustment, study and development, interpersonal relationships, emotions, emotions and family relationships. Accepting counseling does not mean there is a mental or spiritual problem, and being able to actively seek help is a positive state of mind.

A: Some psychological problems can be alleviated by self-regulation, but if the problem is serious or persistent for a long time, it needs to be addressed through counseling or treatment. 7. Can a psychological problem be solved with a single consultation?

A: Psychological problems cannot be solved with a single consultation. When people turn to counseling, they often come with many problems that have developed over the years, whether it's the elimination of symptoms or the growth of the mind, which are difficult to accomplish in a single 50-minute consultation. A complete psychological counseling process should include: collection of information, preliminary evaluation, determination of counseling goals, discussion of counselling options, conduct of counselings, and consolidation of results.

A: If you find a classmate around you who needs help with counseling, you can suggest that he / she make an appointment for counseling or help him / her make an appointment with his / her consent. If the classmate is unwilling to accept help, you can contact the counseling center and discuss with the counselor how to help him / her.

9. Will the content of my conversation with the counselor be known to others?

A: Psychological counseling follows the principle of confidentiality. Without the visitor's permission, the consultant will not inform any person or organization of the visitor's personal information and of his or her actions during the consultation process. However, the principle of confidentiality does not apply when the physical safety of the visitor himself or of others is threatened. The counselor may need to notify their family members or related personnel to ensure the safety of the visitor himself and others.

10. Will I be criticized or ridiculed for my problems?

A: Psychological counseling follows the principle of unconditional positive attention. The consultant will approach the visitor's questions in a neutral manner, respecting and accepting the visitor's thoughts, feelings and behaviors, without any form of personal value judgment.

11. Will the counselor tell me what to do?

A: Counseling follows the principle of helping people to help themselves. Consultants generally do not directly tell visitors what to do, but rather help them to better understand themselves so that they can solve problems on their own and grow in the process.
